How I set up Lighting for photography

Why Lighting Matters
Lighting has always been the part of photography that excites me the most. It can change the mood of an image entirely — turning something ordinary into something unforgettable.
Starting with the Mood
When I set up lighting, I usually start by thinking about the feeling I want the photo to give. For portraits, I often lean toward soft, natural light because it brings out a person’s features in a gentle, flattering way. I’ll place my subject near a window or use diffused artificial light to mimic that softness.
Playing with Shadows
For more dramatic shots, I like to play with shadows. Positioning a single light source at an angle can create depth and intensity that feels cinematic. It’s all about experimenting — shifting the light just a little can completely transform the image.
Keeping Balance
One thing I always keep in mind is balance. Good lighting doesn’t overpower the subject; it highlights them. Whether I’m outdoors chasing golden hour or indoors working with studio setups, my goal is to make the light feel like it belongs in the scene.
More Than Technique
At the end of the day, lighting isn’t just about technique. It’s about telling a story, setting a mood, and making sure the subject shines in the best possible way.
